The Brief:
The garden in Keyworth had a significant level change that could have been a landscaping problem. Instead, the customer worked with JDM Ponds to make it the defining feature of the garden — using the slope to create a pond with a granite retaining wall on the upper side and a waterfall dropping from the higher level into the pond below.
What We Did:
We designed the pond, wall and waterfall as a single structure, working with the natural slope of the garden. The granite retaining wall was constructed on the upper side of the pond — holding back the higher garden level while forming the backdrop for the waterfall. Natural granite was selected and laid to create a strong, attractive wall with character and texture.
The waterfall was constructed within the wall structure with concealed pipework carrying water from the pond pump up to the top of the wall, where it cascades down over the granite face and back into the pond. The surrounding garden was landscaped with planting to soften the structure and blend it naturally into the wider garden. All pipework and the pump were concealed and accessible for maintenance.
The Result:
The finished pond and retaining wall turned a challenging slope into the greatest asset in the garden. The granite wall is a substantial, beautiful structure that dominates the space in the best possible way, and the waterfall flowing down its face creates a dramatic focal point that can be heard as well as seen from the house.
