How much does it cost to build a garden pond in the UK?
Pond construction costs vary significantly depending on size, type, materials and features — no two ponds are the same. Rather than publish guide prices that may not reflect your project, we prefer to provide a free, detailed and itemised quotation tailored specifically to your garden. Do I need planning permission for a garden pond?
In most cases, no — domestic garden ponds are permitted development in England and Wales. However, if you live in a listed building, conservation area, or the pond is very large (over 2 cubic metres of water), you should check with your local planning authority. JDM Ponds can advise you on this when we visit for your free consultation.
How long does pond construction take?
A small garden pond can typically be completed in 2–3 days. A medium koi pond with filtration usually takes 5–10 days. Larger swimming ponds or complex multi-feature projects may take 2–4 weeks. We will give you a clear timeline in your quotation.

Pond Maintenance
How often should I have my pond professionally maintained?
Koi ponds benefit from 2–3 professional maintenance visits per year — spring, late summer and autumn/winter preparation. Wildlife ponds generally need an annual clean and health check. We offer flexible maintenance packages tailored to your pond type — contact us to discuss the right frequency for your pond.
What does a pond clean involve?
A thorough pond clean typically involves partially draining the pond, removing silt and debris from the floor, cleaning or replacing filter media, inspecting the pump and UV system, treating for algae, checking plant health, and refilling with appropriately treated water. We always test water quality before and after.
Can you maintain ponds you did not build?
Absolutely. We carry out maintenance on all types of ponds regardless of who built them. We will assess the current condition of your pond and recommend the most appropriate course of action — completely free of charge.
Do you offer emergency pond care?

Are you insured?
Yes. JDM Ponds carries full public liability insurance for all works carried out. You can ask to see our insurance documentation at any time.
Can you help with fish health?
Yes. Our team has extensive knowledge of pond fish health, water quality management and koi care. We can carry out water analysis, identify potential issues, and advise on the best course of treatment. Fish health support is included in our maintenance visits.
Do you help people moving house with fish transportation?
Yes. Fish transportation is one of our specialist services. We can safely transport your fish to a temporary holding facility or directly to your new property — ensuring they arrive safely and with minimal stress. Contact us to discuss your specific requirements.
What landscaping services do you offer?
