For decades, pond owners relied on gravity-fed bead filters, vortex chambers, and UV clarifiers. Then the drum filter arrived, and nothing has been quite the same since.

What Is a Drum Filter?

A drum filter — sometimes called a rotating drum filter or RDF — is a mechanical filtration device that uses a fine mesh screen stretched over a slowly rotating drum to remove suspended particles from pond water. Water flows into the drum, passes through the mesh, and exits clean on the other side. Debris collects on the inner surface of the mesh until the drum rotates it up and over, where high-pressure jets wash it into a waste channel.

How the Technology Works

Water Entry and Flow

Pond water is pumped — or gravity-fed — into the inner chamber of the rotating drum. Gravity pulls the water outward through the fine stainless-steel mesh. As the water escapes through the screen, solid particles larger than the mesh aperture are left behind, clinging to the interior surface of the drum.

The Self-Cleaning Cycle

As debris accumulates, flow through the mesh slows. A float switch inside the drum chamber detects the rising water level and activates a solenoid valve on the backwash manifold — a row of spray nozzles positioned just outside the drum. Start with your pond volume in litres and an honest estimate of your stocking density. A light garden pond with a few goldfish needs far less filtration capacity than a koi pond carrying 10 large fish per thousand litres.

Drum filters are rated by the maximum litres-per-hour they can process. A general rule is to turn the entire pond volume over at least once per hour — twice per hour for heavily stocked koi ponds. Never undersize your drum.

Installation Tips

Drum filters are typically installed as the first mechanical stage in a filtration system — water leaves the pond via a bottom drain or pump, enters the drum, exits clean into the biofilter, and then returns to the pond via a waterfall or return pipe.

Position the drum filter so that the waste outlet drains freely by gravity. Many manufacturers offer both gravity-fed (bottom-drain) and pump-fed configurations — confirm which your setup requires before purchasing. Indoor or shed installations benefit from the lower maintenance burden enormously, and protect the filter’s electronics from frost in colder climates.

Mains water pressure is needed for the backwash jets. If your mains pressure is low — below roughly 2 bar — it is worth checking with the manufacturer whether a booster pump is advisable. Insufficient jet pressure leads to incomplete cleaning and gradual mesh blinding.

Day-to-day, a drum filter should be largely invisible — the automated cleaning cycle handles itself. A weekly check of the drum chamber water level (to confirm the float switch is triggering correctly), a glance at the backwash drain to confirm waste is flowing, and a visual inspection of the mesh for obvious damage are all that is typically required.

Spray Nozzle Scaling

In hard-water areas, lime scale can gradually reduce the spray nozzles’ effectiveness. Soaking the nozzle manifold in a descaling solution every few months keeps the jets firing at full force. Some owners fit an inline water softener on the backwash supply line to prevent scaling entirely.

Mesh Inspection

Over years of operation, the stainless steel mesh can develop pinhole damage, particularly if large debris such as twigs or stones occasionally enter the system. A brief inspection with a torch every season catches damage early, before it allows fine particles to bypass filtration. Replacement mesh panels are available from most manufacturers.
