Large Koi Pond Cleaning — Rutland Water

The Brief:

This large koi pond near Rutland Water was in need of a thorough professional clean. Silt and organic matter had accumulated over time, water quality had declined, and the filtration was working hard to cope. The customer wanted a complete reset — clean water, serviced equipment and a health check for their koi — before the active summer season.

What We Did:

We began by safely netting and moving the koi to temporary holding containers with aeration and temperature monitoring while the clean was carried out. The pond was partially drained and the floor thoroughly vacuumed and manually cleaned to remove all accumulated silt and organic debris.

Filter media was carefully cleaned using pond water — never tap water, which would destroy the beneficial bacterial colony. The UV bulb was inspected and replaced as needed. The pump and all equipment was inspected and serviced. A comprehensive water quality test was carried out before and after the clean, and appropriate treatments applied to ensure the water was safe for the fish before they were returned.

Once all parameters were confirmed within healthy ranges, the koi were carefully reintroduced and the pond refilled to level.

The Result:

The transformation in water clarity was immediately visible. The koi were active and healthy after their return, and the customer was delighted. A seasonal maintenance schedule was recommended going forward to keep the pond in optimum condition.
