Pond with Overhanging Decking and Blue Slate — Kirkby

The Brief:

The customer in Kirkby wanted a new garden pond combined with a contemporary outdoor living space. The design called for a pond with a decking area that overhangs the water at one edge — creating a close-to-the-water seating and viewing experience — finished with blue slate chippings throughout the surrounding landscaped area for a striking, modern look.

What We Did:

We designed the pond and decking together as a single integrated project, ensuring proportions and materials worked cohesively. The pond was excavated and lined, with filtration installed and concealed appropriately.

The decking was framed and built to cantilever over the pond edge on a secure subframe — creating the overhanging effect the customer wanted. Blue slate chippings were used throughout the surrounding area, providing a strong colour contrast against the natural timber decking and the water. Natural stone was used for any pond edging transitions. The overall palette — timber, water, blue slate — gives the garden a clean, considered contemporary feel.

The Result:

The finished garden is a stunning combination of water, timber and stone. The overhanging deck creates an immersive outdoor space right at the water’s edge, and the blue slate gives the surrounding garden a distinctive, contemporary character. The customer uses the decking area throughout the warmer months.
